Those who learned mathematics through a traditional method will surely find this scene familiar: the teacher arrives in the classroom and begins with a theoretical explanation, presents ways to solve exercises on the blackboard which are then copied by the students, finally, if time allows, helps students to do some more exercises and we are done! Yes, sounds boring, and for some even frustrating..! Yet, unfortunately this scene is not part of the past, because we know that it is still repeated in many classrooms in many countries.

 

One reality that shows how valid this traditional way of mathematics teaching  in OECD countries is still low scores in PISA which evaluates the application of mathematics in a given context. However, it is important to note that those students are almost never taught to put their knowledge into practice and, instead, they continue to work with mathematics in an abstract and theoretical way.

 

Another common issue which is directly related to low mathematics achievement is students negative attitude towards mathematics due to traditional teaching techniques.

 

Therefore, this teacher training course includes a blended program of different ways of mathematics teaching, as an alternative to  the above mentioned traditional type. Our course program includes ICT in Maths, STEM applications, project based case studies, ethnomathematics (teaching maths by relating it with the culture of students), Maths in real life and Maths for fun activities (in Spanish context) that would inspire the teachers whom are looking for innovating their mathematics classroom.

 

Having this course in Spain is going to provide you a content related experience since; Spain is the country that increases the most (23 points) in Mathematics of the EU and is, for the first time, above the average of the evaluated countries, according to TIMMS results. As the report explains, the Spanish fourth graders have improved their scores in the Mathematics and Science tests of the TIMSS 2015 and they exceed the averages of the 49 participating countries. This satisfactory scores are natural result of educational policies that refers to importance of mathematics and science education for a competitive 21st generation in modern world and economic and social encouragement about integration of innovative tools and techniques into education. Apart from this positive tendency in international test results, Spain also houses many public or private alternative-innovative educational centers that lead the educational field. During this course, participants will observe Spanish education system and all its practices about innovative mathematics teaching in its place. Also they will have the chance to evaluate adopted strategies and reforms in Spain to combat low mathematics learning results.
