LOCATION: Malaga

The auditory disability is defined as the loss or abnormality of the anatomical and / or physiological function of the auditory system, and has its immediate consequence in a hearing disability, which implies a deficit in the access to oral language. Although society has more and more resources and awareness about deafness and its impact, there is undoubtedly much to be done in the field of education in order to give deaf or hearing-impaired people the same training possibilities than any normal-hearing person. Hearing aids and cochlear implants are not enough to meet the hearing needs of all students with deafness. The participants of this teacher training course will learn a conceptual definition of the auditory disability and aspects related to the identification and evaluation of these students, their special educational needs, their educational attention, intervention guidelines and strategies, always within a global perspective of the individual, while disseminating some examples of good educational practices. This course also aims to review the acoustic conditions necessary to promote learning through the auditory path as well as to introduce the technology of current systems, programs and their benefits.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in Spain there are more than one million people who suffer from a hearing disability, which translates into eight percent of the population. It should be noted that Spain has a pioneer role in the education of deaf people. In recent years, multiple changes have been experienced in the prevention and care of people with disabilities, particularly with regard to deaf people. The interpretation of deafness not only as a hearing impairment, but as a communicative difference, is leading to the provision of bilingual and bicultural educational contexts. This new conceptual perspective and the consequent orientation of school practices have a positive impact in the fields of health, education and the social sphere, encouraging the development of both the deaf and the hearing students. The Ministry of Equality and Social Policies offer a series of services and actions aimed at meeting the needs of people with auditory disabilities in the different aspects of their daily lives, with the aim of guaranteeing their dignity and equal opportunities. One of the areas of work is education where various pioneering activities are carried out. Specifically, in pre-school, primary and secondary education, specialist teachers of hearing and language who know the sign language provide their services in centers with bilingual experience. Increasingly, a greater number of specific programs are developed and used to address specific articulation, intensity, reading and writing needs, etc. Ministry of Education, in its effort to facilitate and bring to the educational community a pedagogical inclusive model, covers a wide range of activities as; Organizing teacher trainings, seminars, workshops, courses, etc., collaboration with families and associations of deaf people, innovative educational projects, computer applications for people with hearing impairment, applying augmentative and alternative systems of communication and communication strategies support oral language, technical aids to stimulate and develop their hearing, organizing activities outside the classroom and school, balanced emotional development that allows them to develop a positive self-concept, etc. The University of Malaga also each day advances more in research to improve the rehabilitation of people with hearing disabilities. With all those academic and political bases, it is easy in Spain to sea good practices and its positive results in educational centers with students with hearing disabilities.
